Eye Diseases: Uveitis and Glaucoma

Uveitis

What is it?

Uveitis is an inflammation of the middle layer of the eye called the uvea. The uvea includes the iris, ciliary body and choroid.

Why is it seen?

Infections (viruses, bacteria, fungi), autoimmune diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, sarcoidosis), trauma, some medications and eye surgeries can cause uveitis. Sometimes the cause may not be determined.

What are the Symptoms?

  • Redness in the eye
  • Blurred vision
  • Photosensitivity
  • Pain in the eye
  • Seeing floating objects

Who Can See It?

It can be seen in individuals of all ages. However, people with autoimmune diseases and those with a weak immune system are more at risk.

In which age range is it seen?

It can occur at any age, but it is usually more common in the 20-60 age range.

Glaucoma

What is it?

Glaucoma is an eye disease caused by damage to the optic nerve. It is usually associated with increased intraocular pressure and can lead to vision loss over time.

Why is it seen?

Increased pressure due to the failure of the intraocular fluid to drain normally can cause glaucoma. Genetic factors, age, high eye pressure and some systemic diseases (diabetes, hypertension) also increase the risk of glaucoma.

What are the Symptoms?

  • Gradual loss of vision (usually starting from peripheral vision)
  • Pain in the eye
  • Headache
  • Blurred vision
  • Seeing flashes of light around rings or lights

Who Can Get Glaucoma?

It is generally more common in people over the age of 40, people with a family history of glaucoma, people with diabetes and people with high intraocular pressure.

In Which Age Range?

It is usually seen in people aged 40 and over, but it can occur at any age.
