Lack of Appetite
What is it?
Lack of appetite is when a child does not consume normal amounts of food.
Why is it seen?
Lack of appetite can be caused by various reasons: infections, iron deficiency anemia, psychological stress, gastrointestinal problems and certain medications.
What are the symptoms?
- Eating small amounts of food
- Restlessness at mealtimes
- Weight loss or slow weight gain
- Fatigue and weakness
Who Does It Occur?
It is common in children, especially in the preschool period, but it can occur at any age.
In which age range is it seen?
It is generally more common in children aged 1-5 years.
Bedwetting (Enuresis)
What is it?
Bedwetting is the involuntary incontinence of urine in children during the day or at night.
Why is it seen?
Genetic factors, depth of sleep, small bladder capacity, stress and some health problems (urinary tract infections, diabetes) can cause it.
What are the Symptoms?
- Bedwetting at night
- Wetting clothes during the day
- Frequent urination
- Pain or discomfort when urinating
Who Does It Occur in?
It is usually common in children under the age of 5, but it can also be seen in older children.
In which age range is it seen?
It is most common in children between 2-7 years of age.
Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
What is it?
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulty sustaining attention, hyperactivity and difficulties with impulse control.
Why is it seen?
Genetic factors, differences in brain structure and environmental factors (smoking/alcohol use during pregnancy, birth complications) can cause ADHD.
What are the Symptoms?
- Distractibility
- Hyperactivity (hyperactivity)
- Impulsivity (acting without thinking)
- Difficulties in school and social relationships
Who is affected?
It is usually seen in school-age children. It is more common in boys than girls.
In which age range is it seen?
It is usually diagnosed in children between the ages of 3-12.
Mental Retardation
What is it?
Mental retardation is a condition in which the level of intelligence is below age-appropriate norms and this is reflected in daily life skills.
Why is it seen?
Genetic disorders, complications before or during birth, infections, trauma and environmental factors (lead exposure) can cause mental retardation.
What are the Symptoms?
- Developmental delays
- Learning difficulties
- Deficiencies in social and communication skills
- Difficulty with independence in activities of daily living
Who can get it?
It can be seen at any age, but symptoms usually appear in early childhood.
What Age Range Does It Occur?
It can occur at any age from birth, but is usually recognized before the age of 3.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
What is it?
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulties in social interaction and communication, repetitive behaviors and limited interests.
Why is it seen?
Genetic factors are among the most important causes. Environmental factors are also thought to play a role.
What are the Symptoms?
- Not making eye contact
- Delay in speech and language development
- Repetitive behaviors (clapping, spinning)
- Difficulty in social relationships
- Limited and intense areas of interest
Who Can See It?
It can be seen in individuals of all ages, but it is generally more common in boys.
What Age Range Does It Occur?
Symptoms usually start to be noticed at the age of 2-3 years.
